Zara blood drive continues in New York

After the successful launch of the Zara-sponsored Blood Drive on February 25, at New Haven Place, 451 Fulton Avenue, Hempstead, Long Island, the campaign continues on April 14 at Zara Realty Holding Corp., 166-07 Hillside Avenue, Jamaica (10-2pm). This will be followed by another on June 24, at the America Sevashram Sangha, 153-14 90th Ave, Jamaica, New York (11.30 -3pm).
In commemoration of the 11th Anniversary of 9/11, this program started last year quite successfully according to National Coordinator Rahul M. Jindal, MD, PhD, MBA.
George Subraj, President of Zara Realty Holding Corp, said, “Giving blood is a noble expression of your humanity. Strangely it may even come back to you, as you never know if it is the life of a neighbour, a friend or a relative it may be used to save.  You never know. So when you are given an opportunity to donate, please do.”
According to Dr. Jindal, “Donating blood is sharing the gift of life. There are no real dangers in donating blood as the red blood cells form within 48 hours.”
“Once you are 17 and above, do not have hepatitis, HIV, recent infections, not on blood thinners you can donate. The immediate pre-screening involves checking for anemia and your ‘vitals’. Anyone barring those circumstances can donate every 54 days. The blood forms very quickly. All you need is lots of liquid. You don’t have to take a day off. It could be done at your place of work, temples, churches,” said Dr. Jindal who declared his 2011 launch as a Hindu Seva (service) Day and got the participation of 79 mandirs. This was followed by students from Rutgers, several other college student unions from New Jersey donating.
Coordinator of the first-ever Zara Realty Blood Drive, Luz Rodriguez said that “It is also an opportunity to educate others on how easy it is to donate blood. Education is a crucial factor to this drive. There is certain reluctance to donating and this is so because of the lack of knowledge. However, once we explain the simple qualification and screening process it only takes a few minutes to actually donate a unit of blood.
“We are hoping to engage the younger generation also and hope that everyone, parents, teachers, community leaders, can play their part in getting the message across,” said Luz.
