A 24-year-old man is now dead after his motorcycle collided with a pickup vehicle while crossing a single lane bridge in Central Rupununi, Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo). The accident occurred on Monday sometime around 21:20h on the St Ignatius Village Bridge.
Dead is Sylvester Junior De Mendonca of Lot 41 Lethem, Central Rupununi.
Guyana Times International understands that prior to the accident, De Mendonca was allegedly seen consuming alcohol with friends in St Ignatius Village. After some time, the group of young men left the village, heading to Lethem during which the accident occurred.
It was reported that the young man was riding an unregistered motorcycle reportedly at a fast rate, heading in the northern direction, when he failed to stop upon approaching the St Ignatius Bridge, which can only accommodate one vehicle at a time.
Reports are a pick-up truck, bearing registration number PJJ 7485, which was proceedings in the southern direction, was already on the bridge which caused De Mendonca to collide with the right front side of the vehicle.
As a result of the collision, the motorcyclist lost control and fell onto the bridge, sustaining severe injuries including a fractured skull.
The young man was pronounced dead by a doctor at the scene. His body was subsequently removed and taken to the Lethem Public Hospital Mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Meanwhile, the 45-year-old driver of the pick-up vehicle, who is said to be a regional contractor of St Ignatius, has since been taken into Police custody assisting with the investigations.
