A young Policeman was on Monday morning killed after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a car in the vicinity of Brickdam, Georgetown.
Dead is 24-year-old Carl Roach of Lot 1 Water Street, Bagotstown, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
Reports are that the accident occurred at about 00:30h at the intersection of Brickdam and Chalmer’s Place, Georgetown. According to reports, Roach was proceeding west along the southern side of the roadway on his motorcycle, CH 9436, while the driver of the car, a female of Norton and Haley Streets, Wortmanville, was driving motorcar PMM 2528 east along the northern carriageway.
This newspaper was told that, upon reaching the intersection, the car turned south into the path of the motorcycle, resulting in a collision. As a result of the impact, the father of one was flung some distance away, hitting a utility pole on the southern side of the road and sustaining serious injuries about his head and body.
Roach was pronounced dead at the scene by a doctor, and his body was later transported to the Lyken’s Funeral Home.
His mother Colette Duke told Guyana Times International that her son was returning from the seawall when the incident occurred. She said she received a call at about 01:00h, informing that he was involved in an accident, and when she arrived there his body was still at the scene, but he did not survive.
“I get a call at around one o’ clock saying that Carl get into an accident on Brickdam. When I rushed over there, he was already covered up; he already died. They said some car hit him from the back. That’s all I know about it. I think he was on the seawall coming down, but I don’t know,” the grieving mother recalled.
This Policeman had served the Guyana Police Force for some six years, and leaves to mourn his family and a son.
“He was an easygoing and quiet guy. My son was a loving person, anyone will tell you that,” Duke expressed.
The GPF have since launched an investigation into the accident, and a post mortem examination will be conducted. The 34-year-old driver is meantime in Police custody, assisting with the investigation. A breathalyzer test showed that she was below the prescribed alcohol limit.
This accident occurred in less than two weeks after the one which claimed the life of motorcyclist Gurdatt Hemraj, also called “Mahindra” and “Mohen”, a security guard of Lot 20 Goed Bananen Land, East Canje Berbice. He was killed on November 14 after colliding with a car.
In a similar scenario, the motorcycle was proceeding north along the Canefield Public Road in East Canje while the motorcar bearing registration number PLL 8511 was heading in the opposite direction. The car reportedly attempted to turn into a street when the collision occurred.
Hemraj received injuries, and was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he regained consciousness but subsequently succumbed to his injuries.
