Two separate fires at Cotton Tree on the Corentyne Coast and Hadfield Street, Georgetown left 19 homeless.
At Berbice, swift action by the fire department prevented two nearby houses from burning after the family of six were trapped in the burning building. Reports are that the family was asleep and at about 00:30h was awoken to a building filled with smoke. Initial efforts to exit the Lot 28 Cotton Tree building proved futile.
According to Jairam, after an alarm was raised, he tried to get everyone out of the burning two-bedroom, two storied building but they were trapped. He said they were all barefooted and received burns as a result.
Meanwhile in Georgetown, Two houses were gutted while 13 were rendered homeless following a fire of unknown origin. The fire started in an one storey wooden house, which is located at Lot 69 Hadfield Street. At that time, one of the occupants of the home – an elderly woman – was at home with her grandchildren. Neighbours said that smoke was seen emanating from the house and the occupants of the house managed to escape unharmed.
