YEAR IN REVIEW: APRIL – Gunmen invade Cuyuni mining camp

…kills miner, escapes with 100 ounces of gold

A Dominican Republic national was shot and killed on April 6 when a group of armed, masked bandits invaded a mining camp at Cuyuni, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni).
Dead is 55-year-old Pedro Pablo Rosario, a night supervisor at the camp located at Black Water Backdam, Cuyuni, River. The incident occurred at about 02:00h.
According reports, Rosario along with four other workers were on duty while the other workers were at the dredge, which was about 30 feet away, the gunmen pounced on them. This newspaper understands that the owner of the camp reportedly told investigators that a total of 100 ounces of raw gold were on the mats to settle.
