The Education Ministry, in keeping with the trust to increase access to education at the community level, is constructing a Gy$130 million primary school within the new Diamond/ Grove Housing Scheme.
Construction on the multi-million-dollar building began in July, and is expected to be completed before beginning of the next academic year.
The building, when completed, will house some 1,000 students. It will be outfitted with 24 regular classrooms, a master classroom, library, an information technology centre with Internet connection, a kitchenette and sanitary blocks.
Education Minister Shaik Baksh, on an inspection visit to the site on Wednesday, August 31, said he was satisfied with the progress of construction, and noted that the new facility will eliminate the travelling expenses for parents who send their children to schools outside of the Diamond/Grove locale.
The structure when completed will be handed over to the Region Four administration. Baksh also disclosed that two new nursery schools will soon be built at Diamond and Grove respectively.
This means that residents of Diamond will have a nursery, primary and secondary school.
Project contractor Radesh Rameshwar said work is well ahead of schedule and his team is making every effort to complete the school within the timeframe and specifications outlined in the contract with the Education Ministry.
He urged residents to inspect the construction process, pointing out that he is always willing to respond to their queries and listen to their suggestions. After all, the building is for the community, he said.
Residents expressed gratitude to the government for providing the facility, noting they would not have to pay transportation costs for their children to attend schools in other villages on the East Bank and in the city.
