Woman kills reputed husband after Christmas Day binge

Thirty-nine-year-old Joylyn Benn of Lima Sea Dam, Essequibo Coast, Region Two, stabbed her reputed husband to death during an altercation in their kitchen on Christmas Night.

Dead is Dennis Braithwaite, formerly of Georgetown. According to a police report, Benn was imbibing with her friends on a street nearby when Braithwaite showed up and ordered her home. He also reportedly physically abused the woman on the street before he dragged her home. At around 21:30hrs, Benn was in her kitchen when Braithwaite attacked her again, but this time she picked up her kitchen knife and stabbed him in his left shoulder. Braithwaite subsequently collapsed.

The woman then rushed him to the Suddie Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police have retrieved the murder weapon from the crime scene. The woman was arrested, and is presently in police custody. According to police, the woman has confessed to having committed the deed, saying, “He beat me, and in (self) defence I stabbed him”. The woman, this newspaper understands, stated that she had been abused ever since she began living with Braithwaite.

When this newspaper visited the couple’s home on Monday, December 27th, the door was locked and blood stains were visible around the door and on the steps. According to neighbours who wished to remain anonymous, the couple had only recently moved into the neighbourhood.

A neighbour noted that the couple were very mannerly and looked as if they shared a loving relationship. “We never know they have problems, and we live so close”.

According to Andrew Moore, a friend of the couple, he was drinking earlier with Benn when she left, stating she was going home to cook. Moore noted that Benn would return occasionally to socialise with them, since they were not drinking far from her house. He said he was shocked when he heard what the woman did. “She is a very friendly woman.”

Police are continuing their investigations, and Benn is expected to appear before the court on Tuesday, December 28th. Braithwaite leaves to mourn three children, who are all married and residing in Georgetown.
