Woman held over slaying of UG student

Dead: Anthony Ting-A-Kee

Police have arrested a woman as they probe the slaying of University of Guyana student Anthony Ting-A-Kee last Friday at the Greater Georgetown seawall. Police have said that a post-mortem examination was performed on the body by pathologist Dr Nehaul Singh, who gave the cause of death as perforation of the heart due to gunshot injury. The 21-year-old Ting-A-Kee, of Lot 75 Robb Street Lacytown, Georgetown, was reportedly robbed, shot and killed by unknown persons in the vicinity of the Texaco Gas Station on the Rupert Craig Highway, Greater Georgetown at about 01:00h.

According to police investigations, Ting-A-Kee and a female friend were in a purple Toyota Vios motor car, which was parked along the roadway, when they were confronted by two men, one of whom was armed with a handgun.

The men took Ting-A- Kee’s jewellery and the motor vehicle, and shot him to his chest and right foot when he resisted. The injured man was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital. Ting-A-Kee’s stolen motor car was recovered at Lamaha Park, Georgetown with six live .38 rounds of ammunition on Friday evening.

A police rank close to the investigations revealed that a number of persons have been questioned, including the female companion who was with Ting-A-Kee on the night of his death. However, no substantial information to institute charges has been uncovered, nor is the police anywhere close to arresting anyone.

Since the man’s demise, his relatives have refuted claims that he was robbed then killed. They claimed that the female friend has not spoken to them directly about what had transpired.

The dead man’s mother also believes that her son was killed by two females, rather than two males, as was reported.

Meanwhile, students of the University of Guyana were slated to hold a candlelight vigil in the late student’s memory.
