Windward Islands crush Canada to remain unbeaten

The Windward Islands crushed Canada by nine wickets to remain unbeaten in this year’s Caribbean T20 competition at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket ground in North Sound, Antigua.

Playing in the first match of a double-header last evening, the Islanders completely outplayed their opponents to move to eight points. They also stunned defending champions Trinidad and Tobago by 11-run in the opening match of the tournament on Monday at the same venue.

Canada batted first and struggled throughout the innings, managing a mere 111-7 from the allotted 20 overs.

Ruvindra Gunasekera topscored with 38 (3x4s, 2x6s) from 31 balls, while Raza- ur- Rehman scored 34 not out from 41 deliveries with two boundaries.

Nelon Pascal, Gary Mathurin, Darren Sammy, Liam Sebastian, and Shane Shillingford were all in the wickets column with one each.

The Windwards Islands then raced to the target, losing just one wicket and winning the game with 21 deliveries still unused.

Opener Johnson Charles, who made 32 in the first game, led the chase with a 58-ball 61 not out that included four boundaries and three sixes.

West Indies limited-over batsman Andre Fletcher thumped three sixes and two fours in his unbeaten 38 as he and Charles added an unbroken 94 for the second wicket to seal the win.

Miles Bascombe was the lone wicket to fall; he made five. Up to press time, first round losers, Trinidad and Tobago and the Leeward Islands were contesting the second match of a double-header.
