What will happen with persons not registered after many warnings?

Dear Editor,

I read the statement from the Guyana Elections Commission to the effect that the old ID cards will be decommissioned by November 1 this year. I know that there were several warnings from the commission about the importance of people getting registered.

I believe that the importance of registering goes beyond getting the opportunity to vote in general elections.

It also means possessing new ID cards which would be needed to transact all official business.

I would also like to ask what would be the position of those people who, despite all the warnings, have not registered.

I know quite a few people who deal with the banks, and they use the old ID cards currently.

Would they be able to continue using the old ID cards at the banks? If this would not be the case, then a lot of people would be “licking their wounds” for not registering when they had opportunity to do so.

I hope there would be some clarity on this matter, as the newspapers have stated that both of the old ID cards will be decommissioned as of November 1, and would not be accepted for election purposes.

Does the decommissioning also mean that the cards can no longer be used at the banks and for other official transactions?

Sincerely yours,

Dereck Osbourne
