Six of Guyana’s best weightlifters who vied for supremacy at the Guyana Amateur Weightlifting Association’s (GAWA) annual National Senior Championship, left the small gathering at the National Gymnasium in awe on Sunday.
The lifters were Vijai Rahim from the Hardcore Gym in Rosignol with a bodyweight of 56 kg and the only junior participant; Colin Fraser from the True Foundation Gym with a bodyweight of 60.3 kg; Seon Erskine from True Foundation Gym who had a bodyweight of 62.8 kg; Ruberto Tiwari who trained independently and had a bodyweight of 74 kg; Nigel Phillips from the Hardcore Gym, weighing 78.9kg; and Deion Nurse from True Foundation Gym with a bodyweight of 84.3kg.
The overall strongest weightlifter was Nigel Phillips who originates from Wakapoa on the Pomeroon River. He finished with a total of 197 kg. Deion Nurse came in second.
President of the Guyana Amateur Power lifting Association, Mr. Peter Green, called for more sponsorship for weightlifting. He said weightlifting is poorly supported in Guyana as people tend to mix it up with power lifting. He pointed out that the two are different.
Power lifting, he said, involves three stages. These are the Squat which is the first stage, followed by the Bench Press and the final stage is the Dead Lift.
Weightlifting, on the other hand, has two stages, which are the Snatch, and the Clean and Jerk.
Mr. Green urged the gathering to encourage support for the sport. He said that it is his vision to see weightlifting along with power lifting and bodybuilding become prominent sports in Guyana.
