…relatives of murdered Sisters Village pensioner seek answers after only 1 of 2 identified attackers arraigned
Almost two months after a Sisters Village, West Bank Demerara (WBD) pensioner was beaten and later died, his relatives are crying out for justice, questioning why Police only instituted a murder charge against one man, when at least two attackers were identified.
Seventy-one-year-old pensioner, Jerry Rambeer, was found lying in an unconscious state on July 1, 2018 at Back Street, Good Intent, WBD, but took his last breath on July 3 while receiving medical attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital. Joseph Rameshwar of nearby village Belle Vue, is before the courts on allegations of murdering Rambeer between July 1 and 3, 2018.
According to relatives, a close relative of the murder accused was also identified as an attacker but they are confused as to why only one person was charged for the crime. The pensioner’s brother, Ricky Rambeer told Guyana Times International on Wednesday that they were going to hire lawyers to fight their case but were reportedly advised to keep checking with Police as the file was reportedly sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for directions on whether or not the relative of the accuse would also be charged.
“No one man can’t beat me brother; he is a strong man. The Police prepare a file with statements and witnesses; it gone to the DPP about five weeks now and up to today, the file can’t come back,” the younger brother claimed.
Rambeer said he asked the Police last week and they reportedly told him that the file was still with the DPP. Guyana Times International contacted Police on Wednesday to ascertain the position of the file but was referred to Divisional Commander Rishi Dass. However, efforts to contact him were unsuccessful on Wednesday afternoon.
Rameshwar, 23, was arrested at an operation in Diamond, East Bank Demerara and reportedly confessed to hitting Rambeer to the head with a rolling pin during an argument.
They were all at a wedding house in La Retraite before then.
The DPP later advised that the suspect be charged with the capital offence of murder. According to Police information provided last month, when ranks arrived at the scene, they observed that Rambeer’s body had signs of marks of violence, and he had a gaping wound on his head.
As such, he was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital and admitted a patient, before being transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital. However, at about 15:00h on July 3, 2018, the elderly man succumbed to his injuries.
