UNCTAD/EMPRETEC announce Third Women in Business Award

The United Nations Conference on Trade And Development (UNCTAD) and EMPRETEC have announced the launching of their third Women in Business Award.

Organised by UNCTAD in association with selected partners, the EMPRETEC Women in Business Award is a competition aimed at selecting successful women who have benefited from the business development services of the EMPRETEC programme in their country and have shown entrepreneurial spirit and innovation.

The ceremony to confer the award will take place in Doha, Qatar, in April 2012, during the World Investment Forum III (WIF III) which will be conducted alongside the UNCTADXIII Ministerial Conference. UNCTAD Women in Business Award has already had a very real impact on the lives of recipients, their access to education and resources, and their motivation to continue developing their enterprises. It is an initiative of the EMPRETEC programme through which UNCTAD promotes entrepreneurship among women in developing and least developed countries.

The award is granted every second year to women trained by international EMPRETEC centres who have excelled in developing innovative business ideas, providing jobs, and increasing incomes to their communities. Guyana is privileged to have been nominated among the top ten (10) candidates for this award on every occasion since its inception in 2008 (Irene Bacchus-Holder of Amazon Authentic Handicraft in 2008 and Lucia Desir of D & J Shipping in 2010). Meanwhile, in a release, EMPRETEC Guyana says it continues to inspire individuals with entrepreneurial spirit and innovation to start, grow, and develop sustainable business enterprises.

“Our entrepreneurship training workshop sets individuals in this path and allows for a clear definition of personal entrepreneurial competencies that make for successful entrepreneurs,” the release said. It added that the next such workshop will be offered from April 4 – 9, 2011. Registration is in progress.
