Two more charged for drug bust on fishing vessel

Two men on Monday appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, charged for the drug bust on the fishing vessel Bismark 2. Vishnu Sooklall of Lot 254 Fourth Street, Montrose, East Coast Demerara, and Shazim Dean made an appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts to answer to the charge of trafficking in narcotics.

The men pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read separately to them.

The charge stated that on January 18 at Huston, Georgetown, they had in their possession 27.230 grams of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) specially appointed prosecutor, Attorney Vic Puran stated that the defendants have been cooperating with the police. He further stated that since the men are cooperating witnesses, he hopes that the case commences as soon as possible, as he does not want them to be interfered with.

Sooklall was represented by Attorney Latchmie Rahamat, who asked that her client receive medical treatment, stating that he was beaten by CANU officials from the time he was taken into custody.

Meanwhile, Dean was represented by Attorney Euclin Gomes.

Sooklall gave the court descriptions and names of the persons who allegedly beat him.

The magistrate granted the application and transferred the matter to Court Two on the same day.

In Court Two, the men were told to return to court on January 31.

Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) and the Guyana Defence Force ( GDF) Coast Guard Unit on Wednesday last, acting upon information received by the GFD Coast Guard Unit, intercepted Bismark 2 belonging to a Chinese national at mid-steam with 104 kilogrammes (kg) of compressed marijuana and 27 kg of cocaine worth G$ 145 million.

The crew members were subsequently taken into custody.

According to reports, the boat was headed to Trinidad and Tobago.
