TUF leader urges women to get tough against sexual abuse of children

Valerie Garrido-Lowe

The leader of The United Force, Valerie Garrido-Lowe, is calling on women to stand up and protect their children against sexual predators.

The TUF presidential candidate made this call amidst media reports of an Essequibo father who admitted to having sexual relations with his three teenage daughters, of which the mother was aware for some three years and did nothing.

Lowe stated that women have a duty to their children, and should protect them at all costs. “As a woman, and most of all as a mother, I am calling against these brutal and shameful acts.” She added that it is time women stand up and stop sheltering “under the term victim”. As for the three girls from Essequibo, they are now in the custody of the Child Care and Protection Agency. The father is said to be in police custody. Lowe is also calling for more awareness on the Sexual Offences Act. “The bill is a good thing, but it doesn’t end there… there is no use having a bill and something is hidden.” She noted that The TUF plans to examine the act’s effectiveness in cases of sexual abuse and the other areas that are provided for in the act.
