Trotman on a mission to “bring parliament to life for young people”

Speaker of the National Assembly Raphael Trotman

The “Bring Parliament to Life for Young People” initiative touched down in Region Six last Friday after an eventful day in Region Five on Thursday.
The first stop in East Berbice was at the St Therese’s Primary School in New Amsterdam where hundreds of students gathered to hear from the Speaker of the National Assembly Raphael Trotman, Public Relations Officer of the Parliament Onieka Alphonso-Walton, and also viewed a 15-minute feature on the history of Guyana’s Parliament. The contingent comprised of Regional Education Officer Shifran Bhajan and other education officials.
After the interaction at St Therese’s, Trotman interacted with the students. “We wish to visit all the students from all the schools, but we can’t… this is meant to let them know that we care … that they are important that the decisions we are taking are being done with them in mind… and also to let them know that role of Parliament is not for politicians to fight each other, but the role of Parliament is to govern the nation on behalf of the people and importantly the children.”
Regions Five and Six were selected for this activity since most schools from these regions have visited the Parliament Buildings.  On Friday, Trotman was hoping to have other parliamentarians from the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) and the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) join the team as it travels around the region. Following the visit to St Therese’s Primary, the team stopped at Graces’ Pre-School, then to Rose Hall Estate, Cropper and Manchester primary schools with the final visit being the Skeldon Line Path Secondary School.
Most of these schools would have already visited the National Assembly during the first quarter of 2012. On Thursday, Trotman and the team visited Bush Lot Secondary, Belladrum, Hopetown and Cotton Tree primary schools on West Coast Berbice. There was also a television programme on LTRVS Channel 10 on Thursday night discussing the initiative and the feedback.
