Toronto-based Guyanese have raised in excess of CN $48,000 which will be donated to the Renal Dialysis Care Unit in Guyana. Over the years, the country has been the beneficiary of the kindness of Guyanese residing overseas.

Every year, thousands of dollars have been pouring into the country from friends and relatives abroad for various worthwhile projects relating to health, housing, education and culture.

Last month, donations at the Voice of the Vedas Cultural Sabha’s alone climbed to $48,000 which the organisation plans to turn over to the Georgetown Hospital to fund renal dialysis.

VOV chairman, Dr. Budhendranauth Doobay who is also spiritual leader at the Mandir, said his mandir undertook the donations program so that “people in Guyana would be able to receive care and that’s… the goal…”, He added: “Affordable treatment should be available to anyone who needs it.”

Also at another fundraiser in Toronto last month, the success story of the generosity of Guyanese abroad continued. The fundraising was organised by the Guyana Help the Kids project, which is headed by Dr Narendra Singh.

The organisation is working in collaboration with the Guyana government and UG to decrease infant mortality.

The organisation has already donated funds to upgrade the neonatal unit at the hospital with incubators and monitors, and is working on complementing this with biomedical and respiratory care support.

Another plan is to extend similar support to the New Amsterdam and Linden Hospitals, and other regional health centres. The efforts by the VOV and the Guyana Help the Kids project are worthy of ongoing support and Guyanese in the diaspora are urged to make donations.
