Toronto-based Guyanese raise funds for Caribbean charity

A group of Toronto-based Guyanese organised a fund-raiser last weekend to benefit the Toronto Caribbean Children Foundation (TCCF). Guyanese-Canadian real estate tycoon Jay Brijpaul, founder and president of TCCF, spearheaded the fund-raiser and also delivered the keynote address at the evening banquet that was co-sponsored by Scotiabank of Toronto to benefit the organisation.

The organisation has been providing medical care for disabled children and has helped Guyanese, Trinidadians, Jamaicans, Haitians, St Kittians, Grenadians, and children from several other islands.
The gala evening of entertainment was held at the Liberty Grand Ballroom. The event also included an auction sale of ‘swag bags’ with the proceeds going to the TCCF.
Jay Brijpaul informed the attendees about the amazing work that the charity has been doing. The TCCF was founded in 2000 with the purpose of helping at least one child annually who is ill and unable to obtain the necessary medical treatment in his or her home country.
From its humble beginnings, the organisation has grown and helped some 54 children to obtain life-saving medical procedures, usually at the Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children.
The TCCF has succeeded in getting doctors and the hospital to do the surgeries at no cost, or for a fraction of the actual cost. So far, the organisation has raised over Cdn$ 1 million for its worthwhile cause of performing life-saving surgeries on deserving children.
According to Brijpaul, the TCCF prides itself on being run exclusively by volunteers and keeping administrative costs to a bare minimum.
The executives and administrators of the TCCF do not get paid for their work.
Brijpaul said every dollar that is raised at TCCF’s annual fund-raising events goes directly towards saving a “TCCF Angel”, making it a complete charity organisation. Because of its cause of helping critically hurt children and using of all of its proceeds for charitable work, the TCCF was selected as the 2012 Scotiabank Gala Beneficiary Charity where tens of thousands of dollars were raised last week.
