Thrills and spills on fast, resurfaced track

A race roars off on the newly resurfaced South Dakota Circuit

Race fans were not disappointed on Sunday, April 03rd as thousands turned out to witness the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club’s season-opening race meet at the South Dakota Circuit.

Given the fact that the circuit was recently resurfaced, the fast, smooth surface seemed to be more than some racers bargained for, hence a few spills were inevitable. One of the feature highlights of the day was a three-way collision between Steven Vieira, Carlos Rodrigues and Kevin Graham in the final superbike race of the day. The riders collided on turn two, causing Graham’s bike to become briefly engulfed in flames, before the well-equipped and skilled racing support staff brought the situation under control. Fortunately, no rider was seriously injured in the spill. Despite some other minor collisions, the day could be characterized as a success.

Paul Vieira drove away with the chequered flag in the Group Four category, ahead of all his rivals.

Preliminary results indicate that Mikhail Seeram, driving for team Xtreme, triumphed over his competition to win two out of three of his go-kart races. Kevin Jeffery emerged the Group Four champion, as he won the lion’s share of races in that category. Raymond Mohammed dominated in Group 2B with skilful driving to outclass all other contenders. Local superbike champ Steven “Valentino Rossi” Vieira triumphed in the final race of the day, after the unfortunate incident involving Rodrigues and Graham. Chetram Singh won two out of three Group 2A races to come out victorious in that group.
