Three newcomers on July ProAm card

-Atwell squares off against Lake in main bout

Clive Atwell, who is fresh off a sensational KO of Rudolph Fraser last month, will once again headline this month’s card

Three former amateur boxers will make their move up the professional ranks on July 27 when the 25th edition of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control’s (GBBC) Friday Night Fights ProAm boxing card is staged at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH).
Berbician Richard Williamson and the Georgetown-based Dilan Allicock will make their first appearance as professionals against each other in a four-round bantamweight contest.
The duo, Williamson in particular, enjoyed an impressive career in the amateur ranks, and no doubt they would both be harbouring thoughts of a win to kick-start the next step of their careers.
Another newcomer, Kishan Simon, will begin life as a pro against the veteran Errol Trotman in a four-round lightweight bout, while Gladwin Dorway and Anson Greene, both unbeaten after a solitary fight each, will go head-to-head in a junior welterweight four-rounder.
The main attraction will pit recently crowned national featherweight champion, Dominica-based Clive Atwell, against reigning lightweight champion of Guyana, Revlon Lake, fighting out of Barbados, in an eight-round junior lightweight fight.
Both boxers will have to come out of their ‘comfort zones’ for this clash, as it is billed at 130lbs. Atwell is currently at 126, while Lake usually competes at 135.
Atwell appeared on the June ProAm card, and in sizzling fashion, knocked out Rudolph Fraser in the second round to lift the national featherweight title.
After six fights, Atwell is unbeaten with five wins and a draw, while Lake, who earned an 11th round KO over Mark Austin in June last year to lift the lightweight title, has won six, lost a similar number, and has two draws from 14 contests. His last encounter ended in defeat at the hands of compatriot, Miguel Antoine, for the WBC CABOFE lightweight title.
Meanwhile, GBBC’s matchmaker and referee, Eion Jardine, said the board is pleased to introduce three new entrants to the professional arena, as the ultimate aim of the ProAm card is to develop new and emerging talents.
He said this latest move is a clear indication that the once monthly card is serving its intended purpose.
Four amateur fights are also billed for the evening with action set to commence at 20: 00 hours.
The ProAm card is a collaborative effort of the GBBC, the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association, National Communication Network, and the Sport Ministry aimed at showcasing the abundance of amateur talents and enhancing the profiles of the professionals.
