Three new Bachelor’s degrees in medicine established at UG

Cabinet has approved the establishment of first degrees (Bachelor’s Degrees) in three new areas in medicine; pharmacy, rehabilitation medicine and optometry at the University of Guyana (UG).
Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon at a post-Cabinet briefing held at the Office of the President said the new programme areas have an attached Gy$250,000 per year tuition fee.
Dr. Luncheon also informed media operatives that Cabinet had approved the retention of the Associate Degree Programme at UG.
“This programme has been historically provided at the University of Guyana and it’s a three -year programme…Cabinet also found the proposed fee structure of Gy$250,000 for year acceptable for the first degree programme,” Dr. Luncheon said.
This new move by government forms part of the objective to deliver quality health care services to citizens.
The University introduced a Masters of Medicine in obstetrics and gynaecology, which is aimed at helping the local health sector to realize the Millennium Development Goals.
In 2002, the BSc in Nursing was introduced with the intention to meet the needs of health care system in Guyana by preparing nurses for overall performance as nurse managers and leaders, public health nurses, nurse educators and specialty clinical nurses.
Last year the first batch of dentists graduated from the four-year Bachelor’s Degree in Dentistry programme.
