Police have arrested another suspect in an October 7 robbery on a Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara family. So far, three suspects are in custody, two of whom are brothers.
The alleged robbers had reportedly opened fire on police two days after the Cornelia Ida incident, while the officers were responding to a robbery committed on a Leonora woman as she was leaving the Leonora Market.
One of the robbers was shot in the chest and, up to press time, was listed as being in serious but stable condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
According to police reports, Meena Hansraj of Leonora, West Coast Demerara was robbed of a quantity of jewellery as she was closing up her shop at the market. A lone bandit held her up and ran away with the items. An alarm was raised and police officers in the vicinity gave chase.
The alleged thief ran towards the canfields, and was joined by another man, who was also armed. The two men opened fire on police who retaliated, striking one of the suspects. The other reportedly threw his weapon into the nearby canal.
Police are still looking for the weapon.
The police are also still looking for at least one other suspect in the Cornelia Ida robbery, this newspaper was told. Police had said that at about 21: 15hrs on Thursday, Pharbattie Kemlall, 48, and her two sons: Bridgemohan, 24, and Premnauth, 22, were in their home when the suspects entered through an open door and held them up.
They robbed the family of $ 20,000 cash, a small quantity of jewellery and a cellular phone. During the process, they assaulted the family, shooting Bridgemohan in his abdomen and right thigh, and Premnauth in his right thigh and right hand.
Premnauth was discharged from the Balwant Singh Hospital on Saturday, while Bridgemohan remains in stable condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
