This is a reasonable package for teachers

Dear Editor,

I read in your newspaper that a new benefits package has been agreed for teachers. And I was excited to find out what it entails, because I really think our teachers deserve much more than what they were getting. And from what I learnt, I have to say that the package is a reasonable one.

Firstly, there is a five per cent retroactive increase in salaries, and this increase would cover five years, starting from this year (2011). Even though five per cent would not mean a lot more in terms of spending power, I am sure that teachers are still very grateful for it.

Secondly, I think this would definitely motivate more young persons who have a desire to be part of the teaching profession.

In addition, there is a scholarship programme for teachers, and even though mathematics and science teachers will be given priority, it will be very helpful for teachers desirous of furthering their studies. This scholarship programme would help to provide an incentive for teachers to improve their education and, more importantly, to stay in Guyana. This, I believe, would reduce the need to employ mathematics and science teachers from overseas, as this may very well happen if the current trends continue.

Also, it was agreed that one hundred house lots would be set aside for allocation to teachers with pressing needs. Considering the circumstances of our teachers, providing house lots for them is important; and it is even better that the government would provide a housing fund for teachers to construct their homes. The fund would be available soon.

The agreement also provides for a very attractive package for teachers who would like to go to teach in hinterland communities. This package includes a Gy$30,000 monthly housing grant and a travel allowance for teachers, their spouses and children under age 18 to commute to the Coast every term on a return trip. I would like to commend the Guyana Teachers Union and the Ministry of Education for coming up with this package for teachers. I am quite sure that our teachers are all very thankful.

Yours faithfully,

Malini Dass
