The use of social media on the rise

Dear Editor,
The excitement is certainly on, as thousands of Guyanese and their businesses are now using social media, such as, Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and Pinterest. According to reports in the Guyana Times, it is estimated that more than 200,000 persons are part of the social media transformation.
More businesses understand the growing need to get on the social media platform in order to grow their businesses.
With the government investing heavily in Information Communication Technology (ICT) with programmes, such as, the One Laptop Per Family (OLPF), laying of the fibre-optic cables, and others, Guyanese Internet usage is expected to rise, as more and more persons will also use their smartphones to access social media and the Internet.
It is important to note that, while social media helps us to connect with others and get real time information disseminated instantaneously, it runs the risk of persons hacking into profiles and spreading misinformation, which often causes confusion, as we experienced during our last elections.
I caution users who are members of these social networking sites to act responsibly and ensure that all information, when posted, is correct.
Yours sincerely,
Nicholas Hoyte
