The story of Manohar Aich

Dear Editor,

The daily Guyana Times newspaper carried a very interesting story on Manohar Aich who won the 1952 Mr Universe Championship and became a very influential figure in India and beyond. I say this was a very interesting story because Mr Aich has just celebrated his 100th birthday, and from all indications, is living a very happy and healthy life.

But how was he able to reach that mark and yet still remain as healthy? He credits his longevity to a healthy lifestyle in which he minimises stress and focuses on happiness. Importantly, he does not smoke nor consume alcohol, both of which have lasting devastating effects on the body, especially when persons become addicts.

For this reason, I believe that as part of our efforts to encourage persons to lead healthy and productive lives, Mr Aich could certainly be used as a role model to younger folks. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is very important if citizens are to remain useful and productive to their families and their communities.

Even Aich’s story about how he became successful needs to be told often, as it can inspire others who are in similar situation to strive for greatness and make a difference in a positive way. Mr Aich turned to bodybuilding while he was imprisoned in the 1940s for opposing Britain’s continued colonial rule of India. When he was released, he went on to compete as a bodybuilder, earning success in international competitions which culminated with his taking the Mr Universe title in 1952.

While his wife took care of their children, Aich travelled, competed and made a living. And on his return to India, he trained future bodybuilding champions. Today, he is seen as a hero in his home country. I am sure his story will inspire Guyanese to lead healthy and productive lives and always strive to do positive things even in despair.

Yours truly,

S Sylvestor
