The ‘Mother and Daughter Pageant’ Highlighting the bond between mothers and daughters

More than two decades ago, two teachers were chatting casually in the St Joseph classroom. They talked about life, love and family relationships. But little did they know that their discussion would lead to creating one of Guyana’s most notable pageants.
As the bell rang to signal the end of the lunch break, Ingrid Fung and Gwen Wiltshire were sure that they had found something to bring joy and entertainment to the entire family.
“The Mother and Daughter Pageant had its genesis at the National Sports Hall in 1990, and it grew and blossomed over the years. Today it is one of the most prestigious events held at the National Cultural Centre,” Ingrid Fung declared in an interview with Guyana Times Sunday Magazine.

An experienced educator, Ingrid is no stranger to the theatrical stage since the latter part of the 70s and into the 80s. Her first experience was a part of the stage play of “For Better for Worse” held at the NCC. She also took part in the first five Link Shows and participated in productions with several theatre companies in the Caribbean.
Ingrid has used her experience in developing and creating entertaining features, making the pageant an anticipated one. The event’s mother and daughter pairs, supported by their families, vie for the ‘Supa Stylistics’ title. Ingrid said they showcase their bond, love, friendship and, of course, gorgeous outfits, in three different categories.
Now, Ingrid and her daughter Sulan, together with a very competent team, work tirelessly each year to put together an outstanding show. Ingrid pointed out that each year lasting friendships are forged.
“Sulan made her first appearance on stage at the tender age of four when she joined me to welcome the audience. All she managed to say was, ‘Welcome all!’ Today, this very talented young woman is the producer, as I passed the baton to her last year when she and the show came of age,” Ingrid, the pageant’s consultant and manager, explained.
Sulan, one of Guyana’s youngest dental surgeons, is very creative and meticulous as she produces and directs the pageant. Even though her job demands most of her time, she manages to invest as much as she could in producing a memorable event for mothers and daughters and, ultimately, the entire family.
This year, both Sulan and Ingrid promise their supporters a production that would be unparalleled. In its 22nd year, the event would be held May 11 at the National Cultural Centre under the theme ‘Love’s Showtime’.
Pairs of mothers and daughters will compete in the ‘Junior’ (daughters 4-8 years old), ‘Middle’ (9-14) and ‘Senior’ (15 years and above) categories, and will display their elegant, casual and party wear.
In addition to great entertainment, patrons will receive several giveaways.
