“I will continue to speak out against and about opposition politicians and those who preach racism in our country. The days of racism are done in this country and the PPP will ensure that they never return to Guyana”
President Bharrat Jagdeo expressed these sentiments while addressing in excess of five thousand supporters at the grand PPP/C Bartica elections rally on Saturday evening.
Jagdeo strongly condemned opposition politicians and their agents whom he alleged had intensified their campaign over the past few weeks to wreak havoc, disunity and racial divisions amongst the Guyanese people in the run-up to regional and general elections, with the sole aim of scoring cheap political points.
“We have to fight them with every fibre and ounce of energy in our body. We have always fought to bring our people together”, Jagdeo said while further stating his concerns over plans by the opposition to drive fear into the hearts of Guyanese using racial and divisive politics.
“We believe that all of the people of this country must move together equally…. We have a proud people with a diverse culture,” Jagdeo plugged consistently.
He called on all right thinking Guyanese to reject politicians who are seeking to win the upcoming polls on appeals to race, religion and ethnicity.
Jagdeo said: “The best days are yet ahead of us and there is much more that we have to achieve together” while condemning those in the Alliance for Change (AFC) and A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) for seeking to preach change without first recognising that they must ‘walk the walk all the way’”.
He said that his party was not just about “criticising” and “fighting” people but had the best plan and most progressive vision for the development of Guyana.
Launching the first attack on the opposition for its alleged open and continued defence of criminal elements that have wreaked havoc in the country, Jagdeo said that he found that “these people were more sympathetic with the criminals than ordinary people and victims of crime”.
Jagdeo has also put Barticians on notice about what he called “a plot” that was brokered between the ‘opposition media’ and these dishonest opposition politicians to discredit the PPP/C elections campaign and give momentum to what he referred to as the oppositions “dead-duck and dead waste campaign”.
