The Berbice Titans should be commended for the way they played

Dear Editor,

When it comes to cricket, Guyanese are generally diehard fans. The recent Jamzone Master’s Cup saw many of us supporting the Jamzone All Stars because that team featured the powerful Chris Gayle and other West Indies stars. I am also a fan of Chris Gayle, so when his team got knocked out in the semi-final, I did not bother to buy a ticket for the final.

Nevertheless, I saw the match the next day on television, and I was impressed with the professionalism and commitment the Berbice Titans displayed. I should mention that these boys were the underdogs in both the semi- final and the final, as it was expected that Gayle’s and Sarwan’s teams would clash in the final.

I remember how excited my friends and I were when the Berbice Titans were bowled out for 149 runs in the semi- final. We thought that the target would be easily reached, but to our disappointment the boys from Berbice proved us wrong.

In the final, quite a number of Guyanese were backing the Georgetown Pitbulls, mainly because the team comprised established players such as Kieron Pollard, Sulieman Benn, Krishmur Santokie, Christopher Barnwell and Derwin Christian. But again the Titans proved that they were the better prepared team and the one that wanted to win the most. They ended up with a score that was not far from what they had made in the semi- final, 151, and they defended it admirably by bowling out the Pitbulls for 126.

Editor, the Titans appeared to have had a plan, and they stuck to it. In T20 cricket, we expect to see big shots all the way through; but this was not the case in the final, and I believe the Titans played it smart. When they batted they attacked the bowlers in the beginning, and when they lost wickets they consolidated, then accelerated in the end.

The final five overs produced 38 runs. Also, I was enthralled at how well the batsmen ran between the wickets.

The Berbice Titans were unarguably the best team in the tournament and they deserved to win. I wish to congratulate them and wish them the best for the future.

Yours sincerely,

Malini Dass
