Guyana’s six-member team carted off the lion’s share of prizes when the 2012 Inter Guiana Games Men and Women cycling events concluded on the West Bank of Demerara last Saturday evening.
The males commenced their journey from Niemes, WBD, and pedaled to Vergenoegen on the West Coast before returning to the place of origin, while the females also commenced their journey in Niemes and proceeded to Leonora before also culminating their journey at the place of origin.
The Guyanese duo, Raynauth Jeffery and Raul Leal, both crossed the finishing line in one hour, 37 minutes, 19 seconds (01h :37m :19s) ahead of teammate Paul De Nobrega as the Guyanese secured the top three spots in the event. Michael Anthony was the other male rider that represented Team Guyana.
Meanwhile, the women’s pair of Marcia Dick and Toshanna Doris placed first and second respectively in their leg of the race. Dick finished the race in one hour, 19 minutes, 39 seconds (01h: 19m: 39s).
The Guyana team entered the event with a massive boost from having won the Team Time Trial earlier in the day at the inner circuit of the National Park. Guyana and Suriname are competing in this leg of the IGG.
Speaking with Guyana Times International after the team’s exciting win, national cycling coach, Hassan Mohamed, praised the cyclists for sticking to the “game plan” and moreso, executing what was discussed prior to the start of the race.
This is the first leg of the IGG between the two countries and involves the disciplines of Volleyball, Cycling and Chess.
The aim of the Games is to create possibilities for the youths to gather together in order to compete in different sport disciplines, focusing on better sport results and better understanding of each other’s culture. (Rajiv Bisnauth)
