After six years, Surinam Airways will be returning to Guyana and will now offer non-stop flights to Miami and other possible destinations in North America soon.
The airline hopes to provide this service for the Georgetown to Toronto route.
At a press conference held on Friday, March 2, Surinam Airways Vice President Clyde Cairo told media operatives that the airline is here to stay, and will be providing similar services and flights to its customers at home.
According to Cairo, as part of its 50th anniversary, the airline will be returning to Guyana and will be offering better packages to all Guyanese travellers.
Surinam Airways currently operates from Suriname’s Capital Paramaribo to Amsterdam, with five fights each week. The air carrier also travels frequently to countries within the Caribbean and South America including Brazil, Trinidad, Curacao, Aruba, Miami and Amsterdam.
The company is also looking to introduce special fares for children and senior citizens. Surinam Airways will have its inaugural flight from Georgetown to Miami on April 3, with airfares as low as US$ 400. Cairo explained that the airline does not only serve Miami, but also the U.S., Canada and London.
The airline during the 1980s provided flights to New York from Georgetown, and could possibly reintroduce this too.
Acting Tourism Minister Irfaan Ali commended the airline for reintroducing flights from Georgetown to North America. Ali said this will offer Guyana the opportunity to integrate more with the Caribbean and countries in South America. He said offering direct flights from Georgetown to Miami will create great opportunities for the tourism sector and will help Guyanese to travel with ease.
The minister said this development was rooted from talks between Guyana and Surinam on President Ramotar’s recent visit to that country. With the introduction of the new route from Georgetown to Toronto, Guyanese will have a better option of travelling at cheaper rates.
The acting tourism minister also stated that the reintroduction of the Surinam Airways is timely, given the fact that Guyana continues to see increased flights and is looking to move its tourism sector to the next level.
The re-launch of the Surinam Airways in Guyana was also attended by Surinam Airways General Manager, Henk Fitz-Jim and Marketing and Public Relation Officer, Rudi Westerborg.
