A 49-year-old Stabroek News’ driver died early Wednesday morning after he lost control of the company’s vehicle and drove into a trench along the Diamond Public Road, East Bank Demerara.

Dead is Owen Anthony Elliot, of 168 Thomas Street, Kitty — a father of two who worked with the Stabroek News for the past eight years. Reports reaching this newspaper indicate that Elliot and another employee, Harold Lam, were on their way to the Diamond area to distribute newspapers when he lost control of the Suzuki van and ended up in the trench. Lam is said to be in a stable condition in the hospital.

When this newspaper visited the dead man’s home, his wife, Annette Lawrence, was devastated. She told this newspaper that, at around 03:00hrs on Wednesday morning, her daughter received a phone call from her friend, informing her that her father was involved in an accident. “We started calling his cell phone but it was ringing out all the time”, the shaken wife said.

After making several calls to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, a nurse answered and informed her that a man had

died in the accident. She said that she soon rushed to the hospital, but by the time she arrived, the body had already been taken to the Lyken Funeral Home. It was there that she identified her husband’s body.

She could not say what injuries Elliot had sustained, but she noted that there were abrasions about his body. A post mortem examination is expected to be conducted on Friday, January 7th, to determine the cause of his death.

The grieving wife said she had last spoken with her husband on the night of Tuesday, 4th January, at around 21:00hrs, telling him that she was retiring to bed.

She said that her husband had stayed awake to watch television, since he was required to turn out to work at midnight for his late shift.

“I just left him sitting on the floor watching TV, and he just said ‘ok’ when I tell him I was going to bed; and when he usually leaves, I would tell him not to wake me up because I find it hard to go back to sleep”, the tearful woman said.

She described Elliot as a hardworking, dedicated and helpful person.
