Stable political environment vital prerequisite to prosperous economy – President Ramotar

President Donald Ramotar on Friday, December 9 addressed the business community for the first time in his capacity as head of state, beckoning the call for a stable political environment, as he spoke on some of the sectors of growth in Guyana.

The president was at the time speaking at the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s (GCCI) dinner and awards presentation at the Pegasus Hotel. Several businessmen, women and corporate entities were honoured for their outstanding service and contributions to the business environment over the years.

The call for a stable political environment could not be ignored, in light of the outcome of the recently held general and regional elections which left the government with a minority number of seats in the National Assembly.

Ramotar, the first president to be elected under a new regime where the head of state can serve for only two terms in office, sees a number of positives in the new dimension which the legislature has taken.

“All three of the leaders of the parties in parliament are for the first time being in the position we are in and I think it would be a great incentive for all of us, for our own benefit… and most of all for our country,” President Ramotar said.

The president spoke of the “fast growth rate” Guyana has achieved in the last five years, despite the volatility in the global economy, the merits of cheap energy and the outlook for the mining sector with major investments.

Optimism remains high about oil and gas, with drilling soon to start in the offshore area, Ramotar said, and noted that Guyanese must be equipped with the requisite skills to manage the potential wealth coming from this sector.

The president also called for strengthening of the services sector as demands will climax in the new economy, which he said is within reach.

GCCI President Komal Ramnauth said the private sector is looking forward to an oil and gas industry in Guyana, and the role the organisation will be playing in the new economy government has envisioned.

Among those awarded were Dr Yesu Persaud, who was conferred the Lifetime Achievement Award; Alfro Alfonso, The Business-of-the-Year Award and BK International, The Innovation to Impressions and the President’s Award.
