St Kitts to ban under-18s from nightclubs

The St Kitts and Nevis government is moving with speed to make it a criminal offence for persons under 18 years old to be admitted to night clubs and other entertainment spots.

Attorney General and Minister of Justice and Legal Affairs Patrice Nisbett is seeking parliamentary approval, when the National Assembly meets on Thursday, April 28th, to make it a criminal offence for a person to be permitted to enter any form of adult entertainment if that person is under the age of 18.

Under the Criminal Amendment (Amendment) Bill, the owner, occupier or licensee of a night club, bar, casino or other place of adult entertainment found guilty on summary conviction shall pay a fine not exceeding EC$5000 (US$1851) in the case of a first offence.

The draft legislation states that it shall not be a defence for the owner, occupier or licencee to claim that he or she did not know that the person admitted to the premises was under age.

It requires persons being admitted to show a valid form of picture identification, including a passport, driver’s licence, National Identification Card or Social Security card. (Excerpt from CMC)
