Son charged for threatening to chop his mother

A man was on Monday, March 19, placed before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry for threatening to chop his mother.
Paul Smith appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts to answer to the charge of threatening behaviour.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge, which stated that on March 15 in Georgetown, he made use of threatening behaviour to the virtual complainant (VC), Sharon Smith, causing a breach of the peace to be occasioned.
Prosecutor Lionel Harvey stated that the defendant is the VC’s son and on the day in question, as a result of an argument, the defendant made use of a series of expletives during which, he picked up a chopper and threatened to chop the VC. She became afraid and reported the matter after which the defendant was arrested and charged.
The defendant was very surprised by the prosecution’s facts stating “I use a chopper?… Yal jus jail meh an done”. The VC then informed the court that she did not want to see her son go to jail but wants him to stay away from her. She added that her son was not brought up by her, as such he hated her.
The magistrate, after ensuring that the VC understood the consequences of her decision, dismissed the matter against the defendant, who was placed on a bond to keep the peace for one year.
