Slain clothes vendor was being investigated by police

One week after 25-year-old Sean De Freitas Sookdeo of Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara was killed, police are still to make an arrest. The businessman was laid to rest on Sunday.
Police are still looking for leads that can assist them in apprehending the man’s murderers. Sookdeo was the owner of a boutique opposite the Quality Super Centre at the Berbice car park.

Murdered businessman, Sean De Freitas Sookdeo

A member of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Guyana Police Force disclosed that reports that Sookdeo was a taxi driver by relatives are false. The lawman said that Sookdeo was also wanted by the fraud section in connection with a number of matters.
One of those matters, the official noted, was in connection with Sookdeo collecting Gy$700,000 from a man under the pretext that he imports cars. The car was not delivered nor was the money returned after a few months had passed, hence a complaint was lodged with the department.
Other information reaching this publication revealed that Sookdeo was involved in an incident where he and his accomplices stole a car from a businesswoman in Berbice, changed the chassis number, and resold it.
One of his accomplices who was attached to the Licence Office at the time assisted Sookdeo in providing the documentation to facilitate a smooth sales process. That individual subsequently left his job and went into hiding after he realised that police were onto them. According to the official, no charge was instituted against Sookdeo, but he was kept in police custody.
Upon his release, it was mandatory for him to visit the CID headquarters until the determination of the matter. During the investigation, Sookdeo reportedly agreed to repay the woman for her car and the matter was dropped. According to reports, there are other incidents with which the businessman’s name was being associated.
In his community, persons are convinced that he might have met his end owing to such unscrupulous activities.
Sookdeo’s bullet-riddled body was discovered two weeks ago on Thomas Lands, in close proximity to the National Park, around 6: 00h by joggers. The police have ruled out robbery as the motive, since investigators believed that the man may have been lured to his death by persons he knew. On Tuesday, his Toyota 212 motor car was found neatly parked in front of his sister’s yard at Mc Doom, East Bank of Demerara.
