Eighteen-year-old Chavez Sital copped his third consecutive win in the half-marathon (13.4 miles) of the Run Barbados Series which was held on December 3 and 4 in Barbados.

Sital started his international career in 2009 and has been unstoppable since.

Apart from winning the half marathon in three successive years, Sital was also a force to be reckoned with in the 10K, which he won in 2009, placing fourth and second in 2010 and this year respectively.

According to Sital, the half-marathon Under-20 (junior category) victory, in which he clocked One hour, 29 minutes and 11 seconds, was satisfying since he did not get the chance to train as much as he would have liked. In the 10K he clocked 36 minutes and 25 seconds, which was slower than last year’s when he finished the race in 35 minutes and 28 seconds.

Sital stated that athletics has always been his passion and since age 14 he knew he wanted to be an international athlete. He said that he was fully supported by his father who made sure that he got his gear and supplements, even though they are very expensive. Sital also disclosed that his father takes him to train every morning in the National Park. The young athlete said he is forever grateful to his dad for his commitment.

The champion added that this year’s victory was extremely special to him because up until December 6, he was not sure if he would have taken part in the event.

The Annandale Secondary School student said that he would be taking part in Suriname’s Bariki Waka Bridge Race which would be held in the second week in January next year.

After that event the athlete plans to shift his focus to his studies, as he would be writing the CSEC exams in May/ June next year. Subsequent to exams Sital intends to turn his attention to longer international road races, which he hopes to dominate in the future.

Meanwhile, Guyana’s celebrated female distance runner, Alika Morgan, emerged the overall 10K champion and 10th overall in the half-marathon.

Twenty-one-year old Morgan has taken part in the Run Barbados Series for five years now and has been an athlete for over 10 years.
