Significant strides made to enhance education delivery in hinterland regions – Sukhai

The Amerindian Affairs Ministry has made significant strides in 2012 to improve education delivery in the hinterland regions.
At a press conference held in the ministry’s boardroom recently, Amerindian Affairs Minister Pauline Sukhai noted some of the achievements of the ministry in 2012 in this regard.
She disclosed that some 62 students graduated from the Hinterland Scholarship Programme, attending both secondary schools and technical institutes.
Sukhai noted that during the Amerindian Heritage dinner in September, persons who performed exceptionally well under the programme were awarded.

The minister announced that more than 30,000 hinterland pupils benefited from the National Uniform Distribution Programme. The Amerindian Affairs Ministry is responsible for the distribution to Regions One, Seven, Eight and Nine.
In 2012, the expenditure incurred for the financing of the project amounted to GY$76 million.
“I believe that the support with respect to education provided by the government of Guyana through the Amerindian Affairs Ministry is a very tangible allocation,” she said.
The Amerindian affairs minister noted that the Liliendaal student dormitory continues to be one of the leading dorms in the country, and the ministry would like to keep it that way.
She noted that last year, the ministry began to enhance the external areas of the dorm, doing land filling, and would in the future look at cultivation, using the hydroponic method.
Sukhai added that facilities are also being enhanced to improve students’ outdoor sporting activities. The project to upgrade the external areas of the dorm is estimated to cost some GY$12 million.
She noted that of the 40 students who wrote the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) last year, some 85 per cent secured grades one to three passes.
On that note, the minister said the government will continue to provide opportunities to improve the lives of Amerindian youths.
