Search on for prime ministerial candidate for PPP – Ramotar

Having unanimously selected and endorsed Donald Ramotar as its presidential candidate, the People’s Progressive Party said it will now move aggressively to compile its full list of candidates, including the prime ministerial candidate.

At a recent media conference, Ramotar told reporters that the process had only now begun. “We are going to start that in earnest. … I have some ideas at the moment, but I don’t want to deal with that before discussing it with my own colleagues,” he said.

A source close to Freedom House told Guyana Times International that the tradition of the prime ministerial post being filled by a member of the Civic is likely to be maintained. The Civic component of the party is not necessarily made up of the known political faces, such as current Prime Minister Samuel Hinds and Presidential Adviser Odinga Lumumba, the source explained.

The PPP/C prime ministerial candidate could come from a wider cross-section of the Guyanese public, Guyana Times International understands, since the Civic is representative of any like-minded individual wanting to form an alliance with the PPP.

Meanwhile, at a recent media conference, Ramotar was asked about his relationship with controversial party member Moses Nagamootoo, a former contestant for the presidential candidacy. Whilst he admitted that he has not yet had opportunity to engage the attorney, Ramotar said he plans to have discussions with his colleague. “We belong to the same family; we are both members of the party. I, of course, know Moses a very long time … he knows where I stand and he knows where we can talk.”

Ramotar made clear that any conversation with Nagamootoo would not be done in public.
