Ramnaresh Sarwan will don West Indies colours again after he was selected in the ODI and T20I squads to tour Australia from January 29 to February 13.
Guyana Times International Sport previously published an article calling for a response from the West Indies cricket board selectors in relation to the continued exclusion of Sarwan.
The stylish right hander had been in and out of the West Indies team for the past two years mainly due to poor returns with the bat and his indifferent attitude to fitness, an accusation made by officials of the team. Sarwan’s omission in the side comes as both a relief and shock.
Shock in the sense that impressive returns in the limited overs format of the game for some time has been sporadic, coupled with the fact that he has not fired in four games for Guyana in the ongoing Caribbean T20 tournament in St Lucia.
Many may be relieved, that the batsman who averages 43.41 from 173 matches and 5644 runs, should not have been out in the cold for so long especially in a team that is currently rebuilding.
Apart from that, Narsingh Deonarine retains his spot in the team, while Veerasammy Permaul will not be making the trip.
WI will play a Prime Minister’s XI before five day/night ODIs that start on February 1 and a lone T20I on February 13.
WI squad to Australia for ODIs & T20: Darren Sammy (c), Dwayne Bravo (vc), Tino Best, Darren Bravo, Johnson Charles, Narsingh Deonarine, Chris Gayle, Jason Holder, Sunil Narine, Kieron Pollard, Kieran Powell, Kemar Roach, Andre Russell, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Devon Thomas.
