Remigrant perishes in Berbice fire

The house ablaze on Monday

A 63-year-old remigrant Berbician perished in his heavily grilled home on June 13 when a fire of unknown origin engulfed the two-storey building in which he lived alone at Lots 56/57 Bloomfield Corentyne Berbice in the wee hours of that morning.

The dead man has been identified as Morgan Jagai. A cousin of Jagai, who has been living with Jagai since he re- migrated some years ago, was in Georgetown at the time of the incident.

According to reports, the fire started at about 01:30h. A neighbour told this newspaper that, after the fire was observed, persons began calling for Jagai, but got no response.

The neighbour said that the fire service was called, but they arrived only in time to save the unoccupied wooden house next door to Jagai’s, which was severely scorched.

The police and Guyana Fire Service have mounted a probe into the incident.

In a statement, police said that personnel from the Guyana Fire Service responded and extinguished the blaze, but during a subsequent check, the charred remains of Jagai were found among the debris.

Meanwhile, the Fire Service has not concluded its probe into the fire that claimed the life of Hazel Johnson on June 9th at Lot 30 Strand, New Amsterdam. Initial reports are that a kerosene lamp may have caused that fire.

The remains of the 52-year-old mother of two, who had resided alone in the front section of the building, were laid to rest on June 14 at the Stanleytown Cemetery in New Amsterdam.
