Ramotar sees tourism potential in Wakenaam

– promises development in health, infrastructure

President Donald Ramotar announced that the island of Wakenaam will be developed into a strong tourist destination which would boost the economic potential of the island.

Ramator made this announcement during his visit to the island on last Saturday for the Wakenaam Nite celebrations. Speaking to thousands of islanders and visitors, he said his government has plans for massive development in the various sectors on the island. He said plans are in the pipeline for the construction and rehabilitation of roads, health centres and schools.
Ramotar said once community development works have been completed, they will aid in the promotion of tourism on the island which would showcase as well as attract foreign investments. He said the government, through the Tourism Ministry, is looking at the possibilities of establishing a coconut oil factory aimed at generating employments for persons.
Meanwhile, acting Tourism Minister Irfaan Ali in his address said the ministry will be working vigorously with the Wakenaam Nite Committee in making the island’s tourism offerings attractive and sustainable.
He said his ministry is working to design a complete tourism package whereby persons can visit the island for camping, fishing, sightseeing, as well as explore the island.
He said added to that, the package will be linked with the Hamburg Island where there is a complete atmosphere of freshness, ideal for camping and boating.
He disclosed that a special committee will be set up to work along with residents in making Wakenaam Nite a stronger tourism product.
Meanwhile, patrons at the event were entertained by the America Angel Caribbean Band, and TV host Joel Gansham had islanders screaming and begging for him to perform.
Gansham and local singer Bindu emceed the show. Vinod Bisram of the Band said that it is the first time the band is performing on the island of Wakenaam, and the crowd was friendly and definitely encouraging.
Also performing were Terry Gairaj, Brandon Harding, and several others.
