Rahim cops silver in 59kg Men’s Junior category

Guyanese Vijai Rahim turned in a silver medal performance in the 59kg Men’s Junior category at the South American Powerlifting Championships, which commenced this week in Cali, Colombia.

The Berbician totalled 547.5kg, bettering his previous best of 507.5kg at the Caribbean Championships, but was edged out by Ecuador’s L. Nieto, who finished with 552.5kg.
During his performance, Rahim set a new South American record in the Squat of 215kg, while Nieto established a new record in the Deadlift with 235kg.
In what turned out to be the closest and most entertaining battle of the day, both Rahim and Nieto had spectators and judges alike on their toes, according to reports coming out of Colombia.
Rahim started by out squatting and setting a new South American record of 215kg to Nieto 207.5kg. Going into the Bench Press with a slender lead of 7.5kg, Rahim chalked up 105kg, but Nieto overtook him with a slim lead of 2.5kg following a Bench Press of 110kg.
In the Deadlift, Nieto stretched his lead with a huge lift and new South American record of 235kg.
In this lift, Rahim managed to come out with a personal best national, as well as Commonwealth record of 227.5kg, to lose by a mere 5kg.
It was an amazing feat for the slender Rahim, who, with a body weight of125lbs, was able to dead lift 227.5kg. 501.63lbs.
This publication understands that both Rahim and Nieto will move up their world rankings following their performances.
However, Rahim’s rise will depend on the outcome of drug tests being conducted on him by a World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) panel.
