Public servants to receive salary increases by year-end — Jagdeo

Public servants will, as is customary will receive salary increases by year-end. Head of state, President Bharrat Jagdeo, said on Friday, September 2, that Guyana is one of few countries within the Caribbean bloc that annually issues an increase in salary to public servants.

The president said he is aware that the increases issued yearly are not as high as workers anticipate, but government can only issue salary increases based on the growth of the economy.

“I anticipate it (salary increases) would grow as we become more prosperous,” Jagdeo stated.

Despite the global economic downturn, government has been able to pay out salary increases to public servants.

Jagdeo added that Guyanese must avoid wanting to be part of activities that cannot be sustained economically.

Jagdeo said the country has been managed carefully thus far, but should citizens “do the popular things in one year”, then they can destroy the foundation, leading to higher inflation. He noted that such behaviour must be avoided, so that economic management could continue to progress smoothly.

Public servants last year received a five per cent wage increase across-the-board, but the Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) demanded more.

Public service increases are usually issued at the end of the year.
