Minister within the Local Government and Regional Development Ministry Norman Whittaker has disclosed that one of the priorities for the ministry in 2012 will be the re-evaluation of properties to facilitate Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) and Municipalities’ rates and taxes assessment. Whittaker made this disclosure while providing highlights of the ministry’s 2011 programme to the Government Information Agency (GINA).
Whittaker said that the ministry has been harangued by a number of NDCs and municipalities with regards to the need to have a re-evaluation of properties for the purpose of rate assessment. They have complained that the current rates and taxes collected for many properties are below the current market value for the said properties. The minister said that the ministry will address this issue in the coming year and will also facilitate training programmes for those who will assist in this re-evaluation exercise.
