Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, performing the duties of president, along with Culture, Youth and Sport Minister Dr Frank Anthony and Presidential Advisor and party candidate Donald Ramotar, all commended the Dharma Maha Sabha for realising the Kalyan Centre and Shopping Plaza on Lamaha Street, Georgetown.
The centre, a multi – dimensional complex, was opened on the evening of June 26. It is anticipated to be a place for all Guyanese, regardless of religion, race, age and class, and it will be a sanctuary for all.
The centre will host a number of cultural, social and religious activities. In order to ensure the continued existence of the organization, and for it to be self-sufficient, generate income to carry out activities to sustain Hinduism, and to address social ills, parts of the centre were transformed into a shopping centre and rented out as various outlets.
Currently there are 21 outlets that are to be used for food, clothing and craft sale. The Plaza is scheduled for opening on July 1.
Prime Minister Hinds expressed hope that the building will continue to be a place where the Hindu religion, its practise and rituals, can be maintained, and also a place where these will be presented to any Guyanese who may wish to learn and be consoled and comforted by Hinduism.
Minister Anthony said he was very pleased that the organisation has thought of utilising the first and second floors of the building for commercial activities, and that in so doing it is creating employment for the small businesses being involved.
He said it is a very wise move to transform parts of the edifice in order to generate income. He congratulated the organisation and all those who were directly involved in making the centre a reality. Presidential Advisor Ramotar also congratulated the organisation on its great achievement and on the construction of the multi- purpose building, which he said can make a big contribution to many aspects of life in Guyana.
