Prime Minister Samuel Hinds has received Guyana’s highest national award, the Order of Excellence (OE). He will be joining the likes of Sir David James Garner Rose (posthumous) 1970, former presidents Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham (1973), Janet Jagan (1993), and Arthur Chung (1980), Dr Ptolemy Reid (1980); Sir Shridath Ramphal (1983), Dr Mohamed Shahabuddeen (1993), Jimmy Carter (Honorary), Boysie Ramkarran (1993), Dr Walter Rodney (posthumous) and Ashton Chase (2000).

Speaking with Guyana Times International on Saturday, May 28, Hinds stated, “I think it is indeed a very exciting, gratifying and satisfying feeling to receive a national award. One works without any such expectations, but one still feels extreme gratitude.”

Those receiving the Order of Excellence must be citizens of distinction and eminence in the field of human endeavour of either national or international significance.

Receiving Guyana’s second highest award, the Order of Roraima, are Attorney General and Legal Affairs Minister Charles Ramson Snr, and Chancellor of the Judiciary, Carl Singh. The order of Roraima is bestowed on any citizen who has rendered outstanding service to the country.

Approximately 133 awards will be bestowed on citizens and groups that have served Guyana with distinction and pride. Among those selected to receive the Cacique Crown of Honour (CCH) are Governor of the Bank of Guyana, Lawrence Williams; Justice Ian Chang; head of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA), Khurshid Sattaur; attorney-at-law Miles Fitzpatrick, Phillip Moore, Malcolm Parris, Clinton Collymore and Dr Desrey Fox (posthumous).

Some of the recipients of the Arrow of Achievement are Dr Edward Green; businessman Brian Tiwari, Trade Unionist Carvil Duncan of the Guyana Labour Union and of FITUG; Writer David Dabydeen; Captain Gerry Gouveia, and Dunstan Barrow, who expressed delight when he was informed. He said, “I am very happy. I will try to live up to the standards set by those who have bestowed such an honour on me. I am proud.” Mr Ramnarine Ramroop, Chairman of Guyana Times also received the Medal of Service (MS) award.
