Prime Minister Samuel Hinds has urged all Guyanese to strengthen their religious bonds as it is important for there to be unity among the religions. “There is a need for a religious sense amongst people in our society, and it is more important than ever to strengthen religious feelings in our society”. The prime minister made those remarks on Tuesday evening at a cultural event to mark the birth anniversary of the Prophet Muhammad, Jashne-Milad- un- Nabi, at the Umana Yana.

Hinds noted that Guyanese need to be proud of the fact that Guyana can boast of peace amongst the major religious sects. He said “it is an example to the rest of the world” of how people should live.

The evening of reflection was hosted by the Indian Arrival Committee (IAC), the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG), and the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT& T).

It was a night of quaseedas and recitation of verses from the Holy Quran, intended to reflect on and celebrate the life of the Prophet Muhammad.

Meanwhile, Culture, Youth, and Sport Minister Dr Frank Anthony said the celebration of Youman Nabi offers all Guyanese, despite religious persuasion, an opportunity to “draw inspiration from the great prophet, his works, his life and the things that he’s done”, in order to improve lives.

Similarly, GT& T Chief Executive Officer Yog Mahadeo opined that “this celebration gives us a cause to reflect upon ourselves”, as most times persons are busy with the day-to-day struggles of life; but “celebrations such as these allow us to do that introspection and analysis of our lives”. The GT& T head urged Muslims to reflect on the life of “a perfect human being whom, in private and public life, we all seek to emulate”. Mahadeo also acknowledged the role religion plays in society, but a far greater role, he said, is played by “each of us as believers” in influencing the way society is run.
