Members of the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) met with President Donald Ramotar on Monday, March 12, at the Office of the President to discuss issues relating to the fulfilment of some aspects of the incentive package agreement sealed between the union and the government.
The union led by its president, Colin Bynoe, met President Ramotar for the first time since he became president and updated him on the status of the accord. Bynoe in a comment to the Government Information Agency (GINA) said the president is aware of many aspects of the deal, having been briefed by Education Minister Priya Manickchand.
The agreement, which was finally signed after a long period of negotiations between government and union, caters for among other things a wage increase, a housing revolving fund and scholarships.
The group conveyed to President Ramotar their willingness to work with him and also used the occasion to invite the head of state to attend the union’s annual conference slated for April 10 in New Amsterdam, Berbice, Region Six.
Bynoe said the conference will feature a packed agenda, including reviews and motions proposed by the various GTU branches and the brainstorming of ideas for greater benefits and working conditions for teachers.
Chief among the proposals is working in partnership with the Education Ministry in the interest of delivering quality education in Guyana.
The four-day conference will include delegates from across the country. But with union elections upcoming, Bynoe acknowledged, it is likely that the executive body will have some new faces, the GINA report stated.
