Flashback! Christine Sukhram and Avinash Persaud were winners at the 2009 Power Stout Open Golf Tournament

Guyana’s Open golf tournament can be described as one of the most prestigious tournaments on the local golf calendar and according to new Club Captain of the Lusignan Golf Club, Brian Glasford, preparation for the October 22 and 23 tournament is moving apace.” Everything is pretty well in order, the ground and greens are in a pretty good condition despite the recent bad weather,” Glasford related to this publication, via telephone, yesterday.

The new club captain disclosed that while this year’s tournament has been changed from its regular November scheduled, he is anticipating a good turnout and a good competition.

“Because of the upcoming December rains we have decided to bring forward this year’s tournament to October, but I am anticipating a good turnout and a good competition,” Glasford related.

Over 25 overseas golfers are expected to join their local counterparts in the prestigious event, but according to the club captain the change of the schedule has affected some overseas golfers. “Our oversees participants, especially from the U. S. and Canada, who have participated over the years have preferred the November schedule and while some have all ready signalled their desire to be part of the tournament, some of the regulars have opted not be part due to the change in schedule,” Glasford noted.

Registration for the tournament closes on October 20 and, according to the club captain, over 40 participants have already gained entry.

Local beverage company Banks DIH Limited under the R1 Vodka brand will sponsor the two-day tournament.

The golfers will battle for over 19 prizes at stake, and the opportunity to wear the championship jackets in the male and female categories.

Guyanese Avinash Persaud and Christine Sukhram are the reigning male and female champions respectively.

Other prize winners last year included Colin Ming, Chatterpaul Deo and Joaan Deo of Guyana, George Brahim of Suriname, Seepaul Sukhnanan of Canada and Mohamed Shafi of the United States.
