One person is dead and another injured after the driver of a car lost control of the vehicle, in the vicinity of First Hill on the Soesdyke-Linden Highway, last Friday at approximately 23: 00 hours.
Dead is 21-year-old Naomi Nedd, of Lot 520 Yarrowkabra, Soesdyke-Linden Highway; while injured is 13-year-old Shaneka Nedd of the same address. Carol Nedd, the driver of the car and mother of the young women, escaped with minor cuts and bruises.
According to reports, at around 23:00 hours on Friday, the Toyota NZE wagon, PMM 8869, driven by Carol Nedd, was heading towards Yarrowkabra when Nedd lost control of the car and ran into a tree in a clump of bushes.
A pregnant Naomi was in the front passenger seat of the vehicle when the accident occurred.
Shaneka, who was in the backseat, received injuries to her leg and bruises about her body.
When Guyana Times International visited the Nedds’ home, a visibly shaken and distraught Carol Nedd was being
consoled by family members. She took some time to compose herself before relating that she and her daughters were returning home after closing her shop at the Stabroek Market Square. She explained that, as they approached First Hill, Naomi shouted “Look! Something run across deh!” and she observed an animal running across the road. In an attempt to avoid the animal, she swerved, lost control of the vehicle, and ran into a tree.
A tearful Carol related that she was conscious throughout the incident, and upon seeing her daughter injured, she became frantic and screamed.
The woman said that she stopped a taxi and took her injured daughters to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre to be treated. “Naomi was far gone. I could have seen it; she looked lifeless to me, but I had some hope since she was breathing,” Nedd cried.
She said that upon her arrival at the centre, the doctors just looked at Naomi and walked away; but later, another doctor came and rushed her into a room. Carol told this publication that she was asked to wait outside as her daughter was being examined. After waiting a few minutes, the doctor returned and informed her of the sad news.
“They told me that my daughter’s neck was broken as a result of the impact from the accident. I broke down; I couldn’t bear it. I was speechless, and could not do anything else than to cry to my heart’s content,” the traumatised woman told this publication.
“I wonder if I didn’t swerve what would have been the outcome?” she cried. “She was three months pregnant, now meh daughter and meh grandchild gone.” Naomi was described as a very quiet girl who was always willing to assist persons in need. She had attended the St Gabriel’s Primary School, then the Kingston Community High School, and had finally completed her schooling at the Business School on Brickdam. She was also described as a church lover, one who attended the First Assembly of God Church on Durban Street.
Naomi is survived by her sister and her mother.
Her remains are at the Sandy’s Funeral Home awaiting a post- mortem examination on Monday.
With respect to funeral arrangements, overseas family members will be arriving over the weekend, after which a decision will be made.
